A 161/4 - inch viola, based on the Clifford Hoing 1949 Diploma Viola, this instrument has started out in life with an attractive, well-balanced tone and is currently being 'played in' by a professional soloist. I look forward to hearing the feedback he will give as to its dynamic range as it opens out.
(update, March 2015 - this viola has arrived back from its sojourn in Edinburgh. It was given the best possible playing-in experience: several weeks of intensive rehearsal of the Brahms Eb Sonata which culminated in a beautiful performance at St Giles Cathedral. Despite the notoriously difficult acoustic the viola had plenty to give, and more than held its own alongside a grand piano in full romantic flow! A proud moment for this maker)
As usual, capturing its true colour is proving to be difficult - the 4th picture, featuring the bridge, comes closest.
